Ovid’s Love Poems

Translation :A.D.Melville
Introduction & Notes : E.J.Kenney

——  One of my favourite parts  ——
When Cupid read the title of this volume,
   ‘It’s war on me’, he cried, ‘I see it’s war.’
Please, Cupid, don’t hold me, your poet, guilty,
   Who at your side so long your standard bore.
I’m not like Diomede who heart your mother
   (And Mars’ steeds bore her back to Haven above).
Others may cool, but I’m in love forever;
   If you ask what I’m at, I’m still in love.
….
   ….
My task is done; garland the weary vessel;
   I’ve reached the port for which I sailed so long.
You’ll pay your vow anon to Apollo’s poet,
   Cured now, both man and woman, by my song.
